COLLABORATIVE
PAINTINGS
These
paintings are the result of a recent and ongoing collaboration between
myself and my partner and fellow-artist, Judy Collins, an experienced
and talented painter-printmaker. Although our backgrounds are very
different, our response to materials, art process and landscape
is very close, and we have learned much from each other in the creation
of these images.
Drawing
on the landscapes of Penwith and Cleveland has allowed our individual
practices to move toward a meeting point and a natural progression
towards painting together in a collaborative manner. My own interest
in the personal significance of harbours and sheltered places, and
Judy's awareness of the 'edges' of things; sea/land, man/nature,
etc., and the extremes of weather, merge effectively in the harbours
and inlets of Penwith and the North East coastal regions.
A simple way
to explain the actual process of the unusual practice of two artists
working collaboratively on one painting is, perhaps, to describe
it as a 'conversation'. The subject is understood and we 'talk'
through ideas with paint, textures, etc., each starting with an
idea and exploring it until the other takes over the idea and expands
it, this is repeated just like an ongoing dialogue until a conclusion
is reached
